Friday musings of LibrarianRaj on BRICS, Mind and Net Access by Rural India: April 15, 2011

Friday musings of LibrarianRaj on BRICS, Mind and Net Access by Rural India:
April 15, 2011
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday musings of LbnRaj : April 15, 2011
1.      Times of India editorial asserts that the BRICS (Brazil, Russia,
India, China and South Africa) is clearly an association in the making .
Ya good it is in the making … many things in their beginnings would
be such that people at large even hesitate to acknowledge the
beginning. To me it is not the beginning or making …. It is the
great beginning and a great making. Frank Wisner says that there is
no political connectivity between BRIC powers ….. so what …..
mutual interests make strong connectivity's. Let us watch and see
…. How this force falsify all tall reservations of experts and politicians.
2.      TOI editorial says …. "Net access could transform
rural India…"  Any thing that is in the making raise doubts of every one …
.. IT intrusion in the rural India will bring to the fore
the un intentional ….. not thought of alternative for development. A true
democracy may be kindled by this so called IT Intrusion. Believe me.
Librarians have a lot to do in this regard …. Let us watch
and see how they show their indispensability.
3.      Shri Shri Nimishananda on the Purpose
of Mind : "Allow others  the freedom to be as they are, without
imposing your mindset of thoughts and ideas.  Have faith and belief
that God is in you.  Spend some time quietly everyday thinking about your
inner self and chanting the name of God.  This way our mind which seeks
information can be changed into a mind meant for the transformation of o
ur very life itself from human to Divine" (Times of India, Speaking Tree,
April 15, 2011)

Librarians look inot the eyes of some one who has arrived !!!!!

Librarians, look into the eyes of some one who has arrived……. ; January 24, 2011
"Live with people who are blissful, so that you can have a little whiff, a taste.  You will have to live in satsang.  You will have to look into the eyes of some one who has arrived.  So that you can have a little taste – little sweetness enters into your being, and you can see.  A great longing arises in you seeing that life is not all misery – that nirvana is possible". – Osho (The Company, Sacred Space, Times of India, January 24, 2011)
The librarians had arrived, are arriving and are going to arrive. Yes we need to look into the eyes of those librarians who have arrived, past or present. The company of these great souls, great librarians creates in us a longing in us seeing that life is not all misery – that nirvana is possible.(Inspiration : Osho).

Give and take or give and give?

Give and take or give and give?
“You must give some time to your fellow men.  Even if it is a little thing, do something for others- something for which you get no pay but the privilege of doing it”. - Albert Schweitzer (Sacred Space, Times of India, December 23, 2010).
What I personally think is that, basically every one feels like doing something good to others all the time. We all understand very well about our need to be recognized…. …………………need to be appreciated by others. We also understand that no body will recognize us ………………nobody will appreciate us……………………….nobody will notice us…………………………..without our being of some use to some one all the time……………….. What about the librarian? Luckily Librarians have so much to give to so many people all the time………….. day in and out. This is indeed a special privilege! We have the noble task of sharing information and knowledge to as many as we can. The beauty of our profession is that we are systematically trained to do so. Let us thank God for making us Librarians. Let us be proud of what we are…………. the way we are. There is more joy in give and give and give …. …………….. the things we may start getting will be countless..  -LbnRaj ; lotus5673@yahoo.co.in ;

• “Well, perhaps a picture of a middle-aged woman, with her hair up, trying to look at the bottom shelf of books through her bifocals. That would mean standing on one shoulder, weaving her head about to get the titles in focus. Then, right beside that picture, could be the same middle-aged woman, with her hair down (perhaps looking like Julia Roberts will in a few years), helping a student (on a computer), while taking photos of the group for the yearbook. On the other hand, any picture that made librarians look like Julia Roberts or Clive Owen would be beneficial to the admissions offices of schools of librarianship”. Question to Seija Mentu : In general what is your opinion about the status of librarians and librarianship?

Answer by Seija Mentu :

"I have always valued librarians highly. The same goes for libraries and librarianship. The world would be a dull place without books - I have loved reading since early childhood and books are my lovely dear friends."

It is quite natural for all of us to long for more and more joy, happiness and enjoyment .....

It is quite natural for every one to have more and more fun, joy and happiness. Time and again we feel unhappy and sad when we face a down. But now I do realise if there are downs in ones life .... how do we value ups and excellence .. and joy. Thank you downs .. you make me realise the importance of what i have .... make me realise the ups of my life ... make me realise the importance of the best of life that i have had. Life continues ..... with less or more of ups and downs ... Let me accept it as it is.... as that is the the best option.

Reading with difference

Reading with difference
Reading continues to be a part & amp; partial of habit of individuals in the modern knowledge society. Just like other seekers of knowledge librarians do read. Reading for the sake of reading
does not normally lead to value addition nor understanding the article we read. The book one reads should be related to one's background, understanding & relevance because according to law of conservation Knowledge neither gets destroyed nor can it be created. Then only what we read gets internalized. When we (librarians) read, we read as a reader only. We need to read browse &  access as librarians. The moment we wear the cap of a librarian what we read becomes more situational & more understandable, as all our works directly or indirectly are related to knowledge organization, knowledge storage and  knowledge retrieval/Dissemination. It is but obvious that we should keep our interest alive to know a more &  more about knowledge, its evolution, history &  eminence. We got down to right this words after reading a write up on "Throwing Light on Knowledge "By G.S. Tripathi…….Speaking tree: Times of India:08/05/2010. Librarians should not miss to read such educative & thought provoking write ups. The high light of the write up should be of interest to every one, librarians too : 1.Knowledge is continuous, 2. Knowledge liberates the mind, 3. Knowledge of the ultimate enables eternal liberation 4; Knowledge is transcendental perception.  5. According to Ralf W. Emerson" A man should learn to detect & watch that gleam of light which flashes across his mind from within". The Ideas of Prof.G.S.Tripathy is so close and relevant  to our literature on knowledge organization. We must really keep learning more & more about knowledge organization from scholars like G.S.Tripathy because Knowledge is power.

How about having a personal librarian?

How about having a personal librarian?

Kalpana Sharma tracks some unusual careers that are finding takers in India too!........  What about personal librarians....... every one has a need of that kind... but no body as on date has realised that need. Who will bell the cat?.... May be personal librarians emerge by themselves and then find their so called clients.. or as librarians dont think out of the box mmmay be be it is the client who will in some way or other find thier personal librarians ... may be people are already having their personal librarians .. may be they have not yet defined it... may be it is done ona a very informal way.... but. It is not a bad idea both for people as well as Librarians. For the librarians it is a next nevel of professionalism. Librarian friends what do you say?

Fw: 20090203 - A reflection by Rajashekhar Devarai on Arun Maira's paper "global meltdown"

February 3rd 2009

A reflection of a Librarian on "A matter of trust/Arun Maira.-Times of India – February 2, 2009, page 16(centre page).

This educative centre page article by Management consultant Arun is educative and sensitizing.  It is specially useful to commoners and non-finance-non economists to grasp a minimum of understanding about concepts like : recession, global meltdown, global slowdown, global meltdown etc. The much valued freedom that the business need, the extent of accountability and responsibility that is required of them towards government and society are well brought out in the paper.

A reasonable and significant ethical level of conduct on the part of businessmen; transparency and required flexibility of rules and guidelines on the part of Government and a trust and belief of people towards both Government and Business work towards building  sound global economies.  As brought very well by Arun business which always wanted less and less interference by government, now wants their unquestioned and unlimited support both in terms of finance and moral backing.  It is true, these troubled times need fundamental changes in the ways governments function, in the way businesses function and in the way people empower and trust governments and business.  Are we all to move forward towards a disciplined flexibility and a reasonable balancer between freedom and equity.

What do we think about this as librarians? Directly or indirectly, to a more or less extent we too are business, a different servicing business.  Apart from asking more and more in terms of salaries and perks and of course budgets; we need to learn the economics of financing of the libraries, our duties and accountability towards all stake holders , I mean the institution we serve and the government and people at large.

As librarians let us learn more and more lessons of being sensitive, responsible and accountability and lateral thinking, at these troubled and hopeless times.  Shall we pledge to be out of the box, shall we restart ourselves to prove our social relevance and indispensability.  We have come of age.  Let us re-affirm ourselves, and continue our age old affinity with knowledge and its power.

Meet Sandhya, the Silent, Sincere and Senior Serials Librarian

It is my privilege and my responsibility to introduce Ms. Sandhya Gir, Senior Library Officer, ICRISAT (Patancheru 502324 Andhra PradeshIndia email : s.gir@cgiar.org ) to our LIS community. She has put in over 30 years of steady service in ICRISAT and has been the pillar post for Library services in ICRISAT, when all others including me left the Library in search of greener and/or easier jobs.

We always see her like this and even this photograph is taken by our colleague Mr. David without her knowledge.

She has a very rich experience in handling serials management. She can be contacted for getting a practical insight into the intricacies and idiosyncrasies of Serials management.
